From the Kennedy Centre
“Over 500 budding playwrights from across the country answered our call for original “tiny plays” inspired by President Kennedy’s life and legacy, celebrating the resilience and power of the human spirit. After a rigorous selection process involving 20 theater professionals and the Kennedy Center’s International Programming department, the six plays below were the chosen submissions in their respective categories. Each of these plays will be produced alongside 20 tiny plays from Ireland as part of Fishamble: The New Play Company’s U.S. debut, Tiny Plays for Ireland and America.”
About Tiny Plays
In 2011, Fishamble invited the citizens of Ireland to submit tiny plays capturing the challenges and joys of contemporary life. Over 1,700 plays were submitted to the company, and Fishamble produced 50 of them to great audience and critical acclaim, with Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, hailing it as ‘a brilliant project…really wonderful’.
Fishamble is delighted to bring a specially chosen selection of 20 of these plays to the Kennedy Center in DC and Irish Arts Center in New York, as part of Ireland 100, celebrating the centenary of Ireland’s Easter Rising. This presentation offers vivid glimpses of contemporary Ireland as seen through a range of perspectives, and is directed by Fishamble’s artistic director, Jim Culleton. It includes plays by international best-selling novelist Maeve Binchy, National Book Award winner Colum McCann, and writers Pauline McLynn and Joseph O’Connor.
Fishamble is also thrilled to work with the Kennedy Center to encourage American citizens, over a range of ages, to submit tiny plays, 5 of which will be presented as part of the presentation in both cities.
